Working from home
I started working from home about five years ago. At first it wasn’t easy. I was lonely, I missed the office gossip, and I missed being part of a team. I felt very stressed and I worked long hours. Gradually I improved my lifestyle and now I love it. Working from home means I can live in the country and have views of green fields and trees. I don’t have to sit in traffic for hours every day, or wait for late trains.
If you don’t want to work all day and all night, it’s important to have a proper routine when you work from home. I get up early every day and do some exercise. Sometimes I go running, but usually I use my exercise bike. I have a shower and eat breakfast, and I start work at nine. I usually stop for half an hour for lunch. Sometimes I take a sandwich and go for a walk. I stop completely at five or half past five. I like to be with my family, so I hardly ever work at weekends.
When you work from home, it’s important to have your own space. Don’t work in the kitchen – imagine clearing away the breakfast things before you sit down at your computer! Work in the dining room, or the spare room. You can even build an office in the garden. That’s what I did, and it’s lovely.
Finally, if you have children, don’t let them come near your office when you are working. When you’re having an important phone conversation, there’s nothing worse than your children interrupting you!

Do you like shopping? Personally, I hate it. I hate the crowds, I can hardly ever find what I want and when I do, they don’t have my size or it’s too expensive.
The rich and famous don’t have to worry about these things. They can afford to buy clothes without looking at the price. They can also shop from home, pay somebody to shop for them, or go to shops when they are closed to the public. The Hollywood stars like to shop after hours when the stores are quiet and there are no fans.
The new thing in London is the fashion show lunch or cocktail party. Only rich shoppers are invited. They eat delicious food, watch the fashion show, and then order their new clothes.
Unlike me, rich people seem to know what they want. They know exactly what they look good in and some of them order the same kind of look year after year.
Lucia de Grandois is the fashion division manager at a top fashion house. She says, ‘It’s surprisingly common for people to find something they love, like a jacket or a top, and buy it in all the different colours we have. Sometimes customers buy five or six of exactly the same thing, maybe a coat or a pair of shoes, one for each of their homes. They’re lucky, aren’t they?’ Yes. It can take me weeks to find anything at all.
